Both approaches produce good lawns. They differ in how quickly they act, what they do to the soil over time, and how much tolerance for imperfection they require.
How they differ
Synthetic fertiliser delivers nutrients in immediately available form, giving a fast visible response. Organic sources release as soil organisms break them down, which is slower and steadier.
That slower release also means less leaching and less risk of burning, and it feeds the soil biology rather than only the plant.
Weed control is the hard part
This is where organic programmes ask most. Corn gluten meal has some pre-emergent effect and is far less reliable than synthetic pre-emergent, and it adds nitrogen.
Realistically an organic programme means hand-pulling, accepting more weeds, and relying on a dense lawn to crowd them out.

The timescale
An organic programme improving compacted Middle Tennessee clay works over seasons rather than weeks. Compost topdressing and aeration build organic matter and the biology that goes with it.
People who expect a synthetic-speed response in the first month usually conclude it does not work.
A hybrid position
Many households use organic feeding with targeted synthetic treatment where it is genuinely needed — a spring pre-emergent, spot treatment of persistent weeds.
That captures most of the soil benefit with far less tolerance required, and it is a defensible middle ground rather than a compromise.
