Brown patches are not automatically grubs. Fungal disease, drought stress, dog urine and grub damage all look broadly similar from standing height, and treating for the wrong one wastes a season.
The test is simple: lift a square foot of turf. If it rolls back like carpet and there are more than five or six grubs underneath, treatment is warranted. Below that, the lawn will out-grow them.
Timing is everything with grubs. Preventive treatment works against young larvae in early summer; the same product against large late-season grubs does very little.
